Frequently Asked Questions

What is nutrition coaching

Nutrition coaching is working with someone on a weekly basis who will teach you what types of foods you need to eat to meet your goals, such as weight loss or improved athletic performance.

It is designed to be completely personalised to your lifestyle, needs and preferences. Nutrition coaches have a very practical focus - rather than a doctor telling you 'eat more vegetables,' a nutrition coach will look at your whole lifestyle and help you figure out how you can make changes that make long term sustainable improvements to your health.

Do I have to count calories?

No, you don’t have to count calories or ‘track macros’ if
you don’t want to. Our nutrition coaching service is completely bespoke – and
we know calorie counting just isn’t right for some people. Your coach will
discuss with you the benefits and drawbacks of different approaches, and
together you can decide on the best way forward. You can always change your
mind too.

Can I work with you if I have disordered eating habits?

Generally speaking, yes. One of the main areas we focus on is
helping you build a positive relationship with food and your body. Disordered
eating habits are unfortunately very common but they can be addressed and it is
nothing to feel ashamed about.

However, we do not ‘treat’ eating disorders. Clinically
diagnosable eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours are two very
different things. We take our duty of care and scope of practice very
seriously. This is why we have a screening process before sign-up so that we
can determine if you may be better suited to more specialised help.

If during your time with us we discover that your needs are
outside of our scope of practice, you will not be required to fulfil your
minimum commitment term. We can make efforts to support you to find a
specialised practitioner.

How much weight can I lose in 12 weeks?

This is extremely individual and depends on many factors including
your lifestyle, experience, and how much weight you have to lose. Reasonable
weekly fat loss will likely range from 300-700g per week.

Remember not to confuse weight loss with fat loss. Quick fixes like cutting carbs can result in very quick weight loss, but this is usually water weight.

Slower is often
faster.

You say you are evidence based – what does that mean?

Evidence based advice is advice that conscientiously
considers up-to-date empirical (aka data based) nutrition evidence when
providing you with information.

Sometimes, with all of the variables that can change in real
life, there may not be a conclusive body of relevant research to give us 'the
answer'. Where this is the case, Science x Art will communicate possible
nuances and assumptions to you, and will use practitioner expertise to jointly
decide a way forward with you.

I have a medical condition – can you work with me?

This will depend on the nature of your medical condition,
and it will be important that you get the go ahead from your doctor before starting
a nutrition or exercise plan. Doctors will usually recommend lifestyle interventions
such as the ones we teach for the most common metabolic issues – including pre-diabetes,
mildly elevated blood pressure, PCOS, and obesity. However, it’s always important
to check.

We do not treat medical conditions and we do not advise on
medications. We take our duty of care and scope of practice very seriously. This
is why we have a screening process before sign-up so that we can determine if you
may be better suited to more specialised help.

If you’re unable to continue working with us due to an unforeseen medical
circumstance, you will not be required to fulfil your minimum commitment term.

I have an injury, can you still do exercise programming for me?

If you’re part of the standard or premium exercise packages,
the exercises will be specifically tailored to you and your needs. If you’ve
had a serious or chronic injury, you’ll need the all-clear from your doctor of
course.

If you’re all about teaching skills and self-sufficiency, why do you do meal plans?

Because everyone is different. Our meal plans are designed
to inspire and will be used as a teaching tool alongside our 1-1 support for
good nutrition habits. They’re not prescribed diets or set and forget generic
protocols. We are not saying you absolutely must eat the exact meals we provide
you, but they can be a helpful tool for busy people, those that have had really
poor eating habits in the past, or those who don’t like to track calories but
need results.

There is also a common misconception that only registered dietitians can write meal plans. This is not the case - only registered dietitians can prescribe meal plans - taking food autonomy away from someone, for example, as happens in hospital.

Why is there a minimum commitment period?

Not all packages have a minimum commitment period.

The nutrition ‘basics’ package has no minimum term. This package
is best suited to more experienced clients looking for a cost-effective option,
or newbies without complex needs that want accountability and support to make
relatively minor changes.

The exercise ‘add-ons’ also have no minimum term. Each package
will last you for at least a month, and you only have to sign up for one month
at a time. Billing is weekly in the interests of affordability.

The standard and premium nutrition coaching packages do have
a minimum term of 12 weeks. This is because sustainable change takes time.

And we’re going to be honest with you – it’s probably going
to take longer than 12 weeks to get all the changes you’re looking for, just
like it took a lot longer than 12 weeks to get to the place where you are now. We
are not in the business of 28 day ‘shreds’ that will have you right back where
you started in a couple months’ time.
